LUISA A. IGLORIA: FEATURED POET ... IN ILOCANO!

Galatea Resurrects is delighted to present Luisa A. Igloria as a Featured Poet.  Multi-awarded for her English poetry, Luisa also has translated English poems into the wonderful, gorgeous, and fabulous language of Ilocano.  We present below her Ilocano translation of "The Layers" by Stanley Kunitz, which was read as part of a memorial event in Provincetown, organized by one of Mr. Kunitz's publishers, Stanley H. Barkan of Cross Cultural Communications.  You can click HERE for the English text of "The Layers," and click HERE for a YouTube video of Mr. Kunitz reading the poem. Here is Luisa's Ilocano translation:

IDIAY RURUTAP
translation into Ilocano by Luisa A. Igloria
of Stanley Kunitz's "The Layers"

Mano a biag iti nilabasac,
naicamangen iti biagco,
tapno saannackon a siac laeng,
uray no adda ladta napateg a maipagapo
nga narigat a lipatan.
Apag talyawco
gappo ta adda canayon nga agay-ayab iti pagtalyawco,
saannac payla a nacaaramat iti pigsa
para ti umay nga biyahe, ket
makitkitacon dagiti milyahe, bumasbassit ken agturturong
idiay tangatang,
ken dagiti apoy nga nagbalin nga aniniwa
idiay campo a pinanawanen iti tattao.
Dagiti anghel laeng ti nabati idiay,
agtay-tayyec, iggem-iggem da ti nadagsen da a pacpac.
Ay, 'toy ricnac ket inar-aramid ko
a puli,
ngem nagsina-sina da met laeng.
Casatnoc nga isubli toy ragsac
a napucaw iti puso?
Napait ti tapoc nga iwaras-waras ti angin,
dapu iti gagayyem a pimmanawen ditoy lubong,
dagiti awan ti gasat ti dalanda.
Ngem agtalyawac, agtalyawac,
agay-ayat ladta,
natalec iti pammati nga madanunac
ti kasapulac a papanan;
isu't gapo na nga nabalor
ti uray sangcabassittan a bato iti dalan.
Iti casipngetan a rabi-i,
napannac nagna cadagiti narba a balbalay;
idi nacaluban ti rupa ti bulan,
nangngeg co ti timec
a nagcuna:
"Agbiag ca idiay rurutap,
saan nga idiay pagtengngelan da."
Uray no saanco nga matarusan amin dagitoy a banag,
ammoc a nacasuraten ti sumaruno a capitulo
ditoy libro ti panag-ukrad.
Saan pay nga nalpas daytoy panagbalbaliwco.
